Sensei Michael Sim’s vision is to train a team of Karate-ka’s of tomorrow. Hayashi-ha is working closely with Singapore Karate-do Federation and Singapore Sports Council in promoting karate to the younger generation. Being a national fighter and coach, he has the experience and technical knowledge to conduct Karate courses and clinic to Secondary Schools, Colleges, private classes, various Community Centers in Singapore. Sensei Michael Sim also strives to change the stereotyping of martial arts as a violent art into a cultured, and discipline sports.

His love and commitment to this sport has triumphed him the reputation as the head coach for Hayashi-ha Karate-do. The trophies and medal he won was earned through sheer hardwork, pain, buckets of sweat and determination. Sensei Michael Sim’s understands that the road is hard and tedious. Nevertheless, his strong dedication and enthusiasm will assist him through.1983 At the young age of 15, Michael Sim started learning karate. He picked up the skill quickly and was selected for the Shito-Ryu Tournament (held in Malaysia) and won a Gold under Team Kumite.

  • 1986 – After 3 years of rigorous training, he earned his black belt (1st Dan). He also represented Singapore in the 8th World Union of Karate-do Organisations (W.U.K.O.) Championship in Sydney, Australia.
  • 1988 – Participated in the Selangor Open and won a Gold in the 80kg Kumite event and Silver in Men’s Kata event.
  • 1989 – In the Singapore/Japan Open, he yet again won a Gold in the Men’s Open Kumite and Silver in the Men’s Open Kata.
  • 1997 – He participated in the 19th S.E.A. Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia and was also the Team Captain for the Singapore Karate Squad.
  • 1999 – By the age of 31, he was already the only Authorized Chief Instructor and Examiner of Hayashi-ha Shito-Ryu-Kai Karate-do Singapore and also earned his 4th Dan in December, directly from Soke Teruo Hayashi in Japan. The Michael also received his 4th Dan (Federation Dan) form the Singapore Karate-do Federation (S.K.F.).
  • 2000 – He again represented Singapore as a coach in the 21st S.E.A. Games in Kuala Lumpur. In August he invited Soke Teruo Hayashi to Singapore to conduct a karate clinic.
  • 2001 – Michael was elected to the Panel of Coach (National) and was Member of Technical committee
  • 2002 – He achieved Singapore’s highest rank of National Referee (A) – on 23rd March.
  • 2004 – AKF Qualified Judge B
  • 2005 – March 2005 , he earned his 5th Dan in Osaka.

*Shihan means ‘Master Teacher’ in Japanese. A title usually given to 6th dans or above
